Effective January 1st, 2005, employers are required to make a quarterly deposit for federal unemployment taxes if the accumulated tax exceeds $500. The current threshold is $100. It is reported that this will reduce burden for more than 4 million small businesses.

Accounting software
There are so many choices small business can choose for accounting software - Quickbooks(QB) Simple Start, QB Basic, QB Pro, QB Premier, QB Premier Industry Specific, Peachtree, MAS90, Shoebox Records, ACCPAC, Quicken, Microsoft Money, an Excel spreadsheet. I have seen so many small business owners go out and buy a $300+ piece of software when all they really needed was a basic software package for under $100. Sometimes consulting with an accountant can save a small business some money...

Home Office
It's amazing how one question can generate such different answers among accountants. The home office deduction is a great example. Some accountants advise their clients that the home office deduction is too risky. Generally, if a taxpayer qualifies for it and can substantiate the deduction, take it.

Here we go...
Finally a down day to get caught up on this blogging phenomenon. Not even sure how blogging works. Best way to learn is to dive right in and see how it works. Business article I read said to launch a blog soon or I'll just be following the crowd. Generally, accountants are the last to adopt to change - my firm likes to be on the cutting edge.
